Effective Skin Care Strategies for People in Their Fifties

Years of exposure of the skin to the sun, use of harsh soaps and cosmetics, high stress levels, reduced elastic and collagen production in the body, reduced production of sebum, skin dryness, accumulation of free radicals in the body and the resulting damage to the skin is clearly apparent by the time a person reaches his fifties and unless the person effective skin care rejuvenation strategies, the rate of development of fine lines and wrinkles will be far too high. This is because with age, the body’s repair mechanism slows down a lot and therefore, the rate at which the cells are damaged is comparatively much higher than the rate at which the cells in the body are repaired.

The outer epidermal layer gets dried up and thickened, the middle layer of the epidermis becomes thinner (thereby weakening the strength and firmness of the skin) and finally, the loss of firmness of facial muscles (because of loss of subcutaneous fat with age) makes the skin appear loose and sagging. A lot of other changes also occur with age such as formation of deep folds and creases due to repeated muscular movements (motion wrinkles), crow’s feet, age spots, blemishes, brown spots, fine lines and wrinkles can be observed.

Use of anti wrinkle creams can definitely help reduce these visible signs of aging. These wrinkle creams contain suitable moisturizers to hydrate the skin; gentle acids which help in exfoliating your skin and removing the dead skin and debris from your skin; antioxidant minerals such as zinc, selenium, calcium, copper peptides, antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E; sunscreens to protect your skin from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun; collagen enhancing substances to firm and strengthen your skin, and several other highly useful anti aging ingredients.

Alternatively, instead of anti aging creams, a person in his fifties can also adopt a regular skin care rejuvenation routine including – skin cleansing, skin toning (one should use toners containing anti aging ingredients), skin hydration (through the use of suitable moisturizers), periodic exfoliation of your skin using either facial scrubs or chemical peels, topical application of estrogens and progesterone hormones (only under medical supervision) for increased skin cells turnover, etc.

In the case of more specific aging problems such as brown spots, the use of mild acids such as kojic acid or any other skin lightening agents is recommended. For more severe cases, the use of more advanced forms of treatment might be necessary, such as taking botox injections for deep expression lines, laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, or even face lifts or other invasive means of treatment might become necessary.
